Plantation Park is located in Ayr in Far North Queensland, 90km south of Townsville.
The brief required Jeavons to design a major play space for the town that would:
-
- Attract local visitors as well as from further afield
- Have a strong natural character using materials such as timber, stone, sand, water, plant materials, terrain
- Reflect the local environment and cultural heritage of the site
- Be accessible and inclusive
- Provide for a range of age groups
The Destination park was opened in September 2019. The Jeavons design utilises local logs as major building elements for the custom designed structures all designed and documented by Jeavons.
The fully inclusive, multi level set of structures, with complex climbers, crawl holes, runways, bridges and nets are set within a sloping terrain near the Plantation Creek and provide shade underneath spaces as well as lookouts and higher vantage points.
The design incorporates a fully wheelchair accessible and inclusive designed water play area with a selection of accessible pumps and troughs with water flowing through a pebbly overflow into the creek swale. Major roofed areas as well as tropical vegetation provide shade. Sand play spaces, a complex series of pathways and stepping stones; broad expanses of shady lawns; swings and a series of three โvolcanoโ hideouts extend the play across the larger site, and picnic shelters and toilets provide shelter and amenities for visitors. A new sensory garden is proposed as stage 2 of the project.
