Sumsion Gardens is a major Regional All Abilities playground for The City of Wodonga. The playground has been designed for children and adults of all abilities to play and socialise. The play ground is located beside the picturesque Sumsion Lake and had to be built on fill material to accommodate the 100 year flood level.

The design is loosely based on May Gibb’s iconic children’s novel, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. The playground includes:

An elevated play structure with platforms and ramps linking different levels are for accessible play, climbing and sliding;

  • Custom-designed elements enable children in wheel chairs and mobility aids to participate in games and activities at upper and ground levels;

  • Natural and built play elements that encourage children to explore and discover;

  • A discovery garden with sculptural elements and sensory planting that enables visitors to meander, squeeze under and inbetween planting along an accessible path;

  • Artistic wall panels built with the help of local schools;

  • A shaded sand play space with Eucalyptus shaped shade structures;

  • An elevated picnic area provides carers an opportunity to supervise whilst taking in great views across the Sumsion Lake;

  • A fenced off area to cater for the high percentage of children living with autism in Wodonga.
