Following a successful grant award based on a concept plan developed by Jeavons, the outdoor play area at the Derrimut YMCA ELC & Kindergarten underwent a complete renewal. Jeavons was engaged by YMCA Victoria to fully document the design and manage the tender and construction process.  

The separated outdoor play areas needed to cater for babies and children up to 6 years of age attending long-day childcare, and children in 3–4-year-old kindergarten. 

The layout for each area aims to provide a diverse range of opportunities for playing and learning. The design needed to offer opportunities for children to test and develop their balance, gross motor and climbing skills, social and sensory awareness. 

Elements in the space include sand play with creek and water pump, climbing structure and cubbies, terraced slope with boulders to scramble to upper levels, bike track and decks for flexible set up of moveable play parts. 

New planting provides additional shade, seasonal variety, structure and enclosed spaces to play within.
